Me & My Breed: Poodle
Poodles come in three sizes: Standard, Miniature and Toy. I am a miniature poodle with a big heart according to my mom.
We are known for our lovely curly coat, which can come in many colors. A wide variety of solid colors like cafe-a-lait, black, silver, apricot, white, brown and in addition to a mix of colors. We can have many looks, depending on how we are groomed. The French poodle style is most well known. I usually opt for a cute teddy bear haircut.
Despite the name French Poodle, did you know that poodles originate from Germany! We were bred as water dogs. Our thick curly coats are water-resistant.
We are a hypoallergenic breed. We hardly shed because we have a single layer coat of hair unlike other breeds that have a fur undercoat that may shed. Some humans can be allergic to that shedding undercoat known as dander. This hypoallergenic characteristic has led to poodles being bred with other breeds to create allergy friendly mixed breeds. There are a lot of popular mixes, such as goldendoodles, maltipoos, and yorkiepoos.
Despite being labeled hypoallergenic, you should check with your doctor if you suspect you are allergic to dogs before getting a poodle or a poodle mix. Every dog sheds in varying amounts.
We are a very smart breed, second ranked in intelligence after the Border Collie, easily trainable. I know a few tricks, hopefully my hooman will teach me some more. Even though dogs have characteristics known to be associated with their breed each dog will have their own personality. Temperament, intelligence and likes and dislikes are subject to care and environment.
Hope you enjoyed reading about me and my breed. I personally think it’s time for a treat and a good nap. Hope you visit my site again soon.
